Submission Requirements

The length of all letters shall be negotiated with the Editor-in-Chief, be exclusively written for The Weekly, and be signed by the respective writer(s) to be considered for publication. Anonymous submissions are generally not be accepted.

We encourage a conversation that leads to the greater facilitation of constructive conversations and the effective informing of the community, and thereby implore readers to argue, refute and converse about what they find to be contentious in our publication. Please respond in the format of a letter to the editor.

• Respond to an article within 10 days of its publication. 
• A letter to the editor may include a personal belief, opinion or judgement associated with a publication of The Weekly. One may pass such judgement so long as the format and content guidelines are adhered to and with the understanding that their belief may be unpopular, debated about or responded to. 
• In your response, refer to and briefly summarize or give context to the article to which you are responding. 
• Quickly recite the information that you disagree with or want to refute. 
• Present your argument using facts, figures or a well explained personal anecdote.
• Summarize your argument and conclude the piece. 
• Avoid attacking or addressing the writer directly, rather, focus on the subject matter of the article. 
• Avoid hate speech and harm. For reference, the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech defines hate speech as “any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.” Discriminatory language and attacks may include:

• • Exploitation of personal information. 
  • Threats. 
  • Intent to demean or dehumanize. 

• If any writer fails to adhere to these bylaws, The Weekly reserves the right to reject your submission for publication, however, you may edit and resubmit. 

The Weekly reserves the right to edit all pieces for grammatical, spacing, and legal purposes. The Editor-in-Chief has final jurisdiction on whether a Letter to the Editor is printed. Deadline for submission is Monday preceding publication by 7:00 p.m.
