At Muhlenberg College, student-athletes are more than just competitors; they are committed to community engagement beyond athletic competition. Muhlenberg women’s lacrosse and men’s wrestling have participated in events like the 9/11 Heroes Run, showing how these individuals blend their passions for sports with a dedication to meaningful causes, creating a positive impact both on and off campus.

Muhlenberg lacrosse player Dani Sautner ‘27, finishing first of all the female runners, encapsulated this spirit, saying, “My teammates and I signed up to run the 9/11 Heroes run to honor those who passed away during 9/11. I intended to run for this cause and enjoy time with my teammates.” This sentiment not only emphasizes the significance of remembrance but also highlights the bond formed through shared experiences. For many athletes, such events offer an opportunity to stay in shape while cultivating camaraderie among teammates. As they train and compete together, they also develop a deeper understanding of their collective purpose, both in sports and in honoring the legacy of those who have served.

The 9/11 Heroes Run is particularly important, as it serves as a tribute to first responders, military personnel and civilians affected by the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. By participating, Muhlenberg athletes honor these individuals while simultaneously promoting physical fitness and mental resilience. For student-athletes, balancing rigorous training schedules with academic responsibilities can be demanding, yet events like this provide a refreshing perspective on their roles as leaders and contributors to society.

Wrestler Frank DiEsso ‘26 expressed the desire for their participation to reflect positively on both themselves and their team: “I hope to achieve a good representation for myself and the Muhlenberg wrestling program as well as showing our support to the community. Participating in this event shapes our school as one that is selfless and wants to connect with others outside of the College.” This illustrates the broader impact of student-athlete participation in community service events. By engaging with the community, athletes demonstrate that their commitment extends beyond personal achievement to encompass a broader social responsibility.

Involvement in community events cultivates a culture of service within the Muhlenberg community. By participating in events like the 9/11 Heroes Run, student-athletes foster relationships with local organizations and contribute to causes that resonate with their values. This involvement is crucial, as it enhances their college experience by allowing them to connect with peers, mentors and community members outside their usual circles. Engaging in such initiatives also provides opportunities for personal growth and development, enabling athletes to develop skills that are invaluable both in sports and in life.

Furthermore, these events highlight the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving common goals. Just as they rely on one another during games, student-athletes learn to work together in community settings, strengthening their bonds and fostering a sense of shared purpose. This unity not only enhances their athletic performance but also contributes to a more cohesive campus environment, where everyone is encouraged to support one another.

The involvement of Muhlenberg athletes in community events is reflective of the principles championed by the Travis Manion Foundation, which focuses on empowering veterans and supporting families of fallen heroes. The foundation’s mission aligns with the values demonstrated by student-athletes, emphasizing the importance of giving back and community connection. DiEsso also noted, “Among being a student-athlete, it was great to see other teams in our community getting out for a good cause.” This acknowledgment of collective effort underscores the impact that teamwork can have in creating positive change.

By actively participating in events that honor important causes, Muhlenberg athletes not only improve their physical endurance but also serve as role models for their peers. Their commitment to community engagement exemplifies the values of compassion and responsibility that are central to the college’s mission. It is through these acts of service that they reinforce their identities as both athletes and engaged citizens.

By honoring the past and engaging with the present, these student-athletes pave the way for future generations to carry forward the legacy of service and commitment to the community. The ongoing partnership between athletics and community engagement at Muhlenberg College stands as a testament to the power of sports as a vehicle for positive change.
