After ten games this season, the Muhlenberg women’s soccer team sits at a record of 4-4-2 (Win-Loss-Tie). With seven games left in the season, the team will face off against Centennial Conference (CC) opponents for the remainder of their games. Against CC opponents so far, the Mules have a record of 0-2-1 after tying in their most recent game against the Ursinus College Bears.
Going back to this past week, the team faced off against the Wilkes University Colonels at Jeff Morris ‘82 Field on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Injuries unfortunately played a big factor in the game for the Mules as the team was missing five players who together started a combined 26 games on the year. Despite the lack of players, Muhlenberg was still able to generate a few quality scoring chances. Their first chance of the game came when Jaidyn Falcone ‘29 sent a cross to Pia DiGregorio ‘30, which led her behind all the Wilkes defenders. She had a brief one-on-one with the goalie, but Wilkes’s goalie was able to make the save. A few minutes later, Falcone had a chance as she took a shot from the edge of the box, which went past the goalie but just missed, hitting off the crossbar.
With around 15 minutes left in the game, the score still remained tied at 0-0. Wilkes had a throw-in deep inside the Muhlenberg end and broke the tie with a goal that went in just inside the right post. The Mules weren’t able to break through at the end and fell by a score of 1-0.
This past weekend, on Oct. 3, the Mules played their most recent game against Ursinus. In the match, scoring chances were hard to come by for both teams. While the Bears did manage to get 13 shots on goal, almost all of them were from long distance and right at goalie Megan Stairs ‘27. The Mules had less success generating shots, as they only had two shots on goal in the contest.
Madelyn Hill ‘29 had a great scoring opportunity a few minutes into the second half. She had the ball right on the edge of the goalie box. As she just settled the ball and was about to shoot, a Bears defender got in the way to stop the shot and keep the game tied at 0-0. This game marks the second shutout of the year for Stairs, and her 13 saves tie her season high, which was set against Franklin & Marshall College on Sept. 19.
The team will continue their season with two more games this upcoming week. They will play McDaniel College on Oct. 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Jeff Morris ‘82 Field.
