Son pequeñas y grandes y todos los conocen, pero nadie quiere hablar de ellas

Son las historias que nos encanta contar sobre cómo llegamos aquí y son las historias que nunca compartimos porque nos dan vergüenza

Son las cosas que te hicieron venir aquí (te gustó la hierba verde y la gente amable)
Y son las cosas que me hicieron venir aquí (la ayuda financiera fue suficiente)
Estas brechas palpitan dentro de mí entre los latidos de mi corazón
Caminan conmigo a clase
Se sientan conmigo
Cenan y se unen a mí en cada trabajo que hago
Estas brechas me susurran al oído que necesito trabajar el doble que la persona que está a mi lado
Nadie quiere hablar sobre los estudiantes que están aquí porque fue esto o nada a menos que esos estudiantes tengan una historia de éxito
Nadie quiere hablar a menos que haya un “¡fue triste y ahora no lo es!” historia
Lucharé para cerrar las brechas hasta que todos estén hablando de estos temas
Y cada cuerpo que respire sea visto como valioso, pobre o rico

For every breathing body
I see the gaps
They are small and big and everyone knows about them but no one wants to talk about them
I see the gaps
They are the stories we love to tell about how we all got here and they are the stories we never share because we are ashamed
I see the gaps
They are the things that made you come here (you liked the green grass and the friendly people)
And the things that made me come here (the financial aid was just enough)
These gaps pound inside me in between my heartbeats
They walk with me to class
They sit with me at dinner and join me at each job I do
These gaps whisper in my ear that I need to work twice as hard as the person next to me
No one wants to talk about the students who are here because it was this or nothing unless those students have a success story
No one wants to talk unless there’s a “it was sad and now it’s not!” story
I will fight to close the gaps until everyone is talking about these issues
And every breathing body is seen as worth it, poor or rich
