השנה, ההתחלה של השנה. ובשבוע הזה יש לנו את יום כיפור, היום בו אנו מכפרים על חטאינו וצמים כל היום. אלה שני החגים הקדושים ביותר בלוח השנה העברי. אז יש לי שאלה. למה יש לנו שיעורים בראש השנה וגם בחלק מיום כיפור? לא היה לנו חופש לחגוג את ראש השנה, ויש לנו שיעורי לילה ביום כיפור. אני חושב שזה לא הוגן לתלמידים יהודים שיש שיעורים בימים האלה.
כן, יש לנו חופש ביום רביעי הזה בשביל יום כיפור, אבל עדיין יש שיעורים בלילה. לתלמידים שחוזרים הביתה לחג לא יהיה מספיק זמן לחזור לקמפוס לשיעורי לילה. זה קצת בעייתי אם קרוב לשליש מהתלמידים יהודים, ואין להם חופש לחגים כאלה. אף אחד לא מצפה מאנשים להיות בשום מקום ב-25 בדצמבר; אבל, כי רוב האנשים בארה״ב לא יהודים, זה בסדר? זה ממש מתסכל אותי.
הייתי בכיתה בשבוע שעבר, וידידה שלי אמרה שיש לה מורה שרוצה שתלמידים יגישו משהו ביום כיפור. זה לא מקובל! ראשית, אני חושב שאסור לנו לקיים שיעורים לכל אורך שני החגים. נקודה. שנית, הפרופסורים צריכים להיות יותר מבינים עם התלמידים היהודים שלהם.
מניסיוני, פרופסורים הבינו. למרות זאת, אני חושב שהמדיניות שיש למכללה שלנו היא בעייתית. התלמידים צריכים זמן לנסוע ולהתכונן לחגים. חשוב לנו שיהיה לנו זמן לחגוג את החגים בדיוק כמו שהנוצרים צריכים זמן לחגוג את חג המולד ואת חג הפסחא עם משפחותיהם.
אני מבין שהעם היהודי אינו מיעוט בקמפוס הזה, אבל בפעמים כאלה אני ממש מודע לכך שרוב העולם אינו מבין את החגים, המסורות והמנהגים שלנו. שנה טובה ומתוקה לכולם.
Not all holidays are equal
Many people know that all Jews are celebrating the high holidays now. Last week we had Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the year. And this week we have Yom Kippur, the day we atone for our sins and fast all day. They are the two most sacred holidays in the Hebrew calendar. So I have a question: Why do we have classes on Rosh Hashanah and also part of Yom Kippur? We had no break to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and have night classes on Yom Kippur. I think it is unfair to Jewish students if there are any classes on these days.
Yes, we have a break this Wednesday for Yom Kippur, but there are still classes at night. Students returning home for the holidays will not have time to return to campus for their night classes. It is a bit problematic if close to one-third of the students are Jewish, and they do not have a break for the holidays. No one expects people to be anywhere on December 25, but, because most people in the US are not Jews, it is okay? It really frustrates me.
I was in class last week, and a friend of mine said she has a teacher who wants students to turn something in on Yom Kippur. This is not acceptable! In the first place, I think we should not have lessons throughout the two holidays. Period. In the second place, the professors should be more understanding with their Jewish students.
In my personal experience, professors are understanding. However, I think the policy our college has is problematic. Students need time to travel and get ready for the holidays. It is important for us to have time to celebrate the holidays just as people of the Christian faith need time to celebrate Christmas and Easter with their families.
I understand that the Jewish people are not a minority on this campus, but at times like these, I am really aware that most of the world does not understand our holidays, traditions and customs. Happy New Year to everyone!
